When you think of the ‘backcountry,’ there are a few key states that come to mind, one of them being Colorado. Colorado is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. But, this state also shares its hiking trails with some other friends, too. If you want to come out and do some wildlife hikes in Colorado this winter, then you’ll want to hike some of these special trails.

1. Waterton Canyon Trail

This section of the 500-mile long Colorado Trail through Durango is an awesome place to catch some wildlife this season. On the Waterton Canyon Trail, you should be able to see some eagles, bighorn sheep, or mule deer, frolicking and flying all over. The trail is a little more than 12 miles round trip, and shouldn’t be too icy or snowy. Just keep an eye out for those mountain lions!

2. Coyote Valley Trail

No one really wants to get up close and personal with a coyote, but if you can see one from a distance, it’s rather exciting.  Here in the Kawuneeche Valley, which is perfectly named after the animal, hikers can see everything from elk, moose, hawks, eagles, osprey, beaver, and of course, coyotes. For wildlife hikes in Colorado, this trail is very easy at exactly a mile round trip. Don’t miss it!

3. The Discovery Trail (Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge)

The Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge is home to many trails that are open all-year round so that hikers can catch some bison, among other types wildlife. The Discovery Trail is one of them. The short 0.4-mile loop won’t take you long before you see these remarkable animals. Just make sure you keep your distance. If you’re eager to see more animals, this place has more than 330 species of wildlife. How’s that for a wildlife hike?

4. Green Mountain Trail (Lakewood)

Located within William F. Hayden Park on Green Mountain is one of the most beautiful spots to hike during the winter in Colorado. Though there are many trails to choose from within the park, the Green Mountain trail is where you want to go if you’re looking to do some wildlife hikes in Colorado. The 6.5 mile loop is moderate but features a pretty steep hike up to the top. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for rabbits, hawks, deer, and perhaps some coyotes or mountain lions, too.

5. Hall Ranch. Bitterbrush and Nelson Loop Trail

Within Roosevelt National Forest in Colorado, hikers can find the magic that is the Bitterbrush and Nelson Loop Trail. This trail is just as long as its name, at 10 miles for the loop. This is a great hike if you’re looking for a bit of a physical challenge in addition to wildlife viewing. Here, you’ll find white-tailed deer, golden eagles, rabbits, and watch out; maybe some rattlesnakes, too!
